After posting some great finishes early in his rookie season in the Sportsman ranks, Joey Ladouceur and his Alexandria, Ontario race team was on the verge of scoring their first career win in the Sportsman division. With a weekend doubleheader set for this past Canada Day Weekend, Ladouceur was hopeful that this would be the weekend he would visit victory lane.
On Sunday night, Joey started his qualifying heat race from the sixth position and consistently moved forward. By the end of the eight lap race he was up to third place. He lined up for the 20 lap main event from outside of the fourth row in the eighth starting spot and quickly moved forward. A caution on lap five slowed the field, and already Ladouceur had moved up to third place. On lap seven, Joey moved into second place, just before the caution came out once again. On the restart, he blasted into the lead and never looked back, taking his first career victory in the Sportsman ranks.
“I really have to thank the crew and all of our sponsors for their support as well as my wife Josée and my family”, says Ladouceur from victory lane. “We have been working hard on this car, and we have been close, so its nice to be able to get that first win out of the way”.
Joey returned to Cornwall Speedway on Monday for the next round of the Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman series. He set fast time in his group in time trials and backed that up with a win in his qualifying heat race, earning a spot in the redraw for a top 12 starting position. Joey started the 50 lap main event from the 11th position and despite a broken shock tower early in the race he was able to salvage a ninth place finish.
“We were on the outside and the car that was on our inside hit a rough spot in the track and bounced into us, and we broke the left front shock tower”, explains Ladouceur. “It was tough going out there, but we were able to battle to a top ten finish, so we will take it”.
The Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman Series continues this week with a rare Wednesday night stop at Ransomville Speedway in Western New York State. Joey will also return to Cornwall Speedway this coming Sunday night.
