Going into the 2013 season, Joey Ladouceur was well aware that the transition from the Pro Stock ranks where he has dominated the past few seasons to the ultra-competitive Sportsman division was not going to easy. However, he has been quick learner, and seems poised to capture his first career Sportsman victory. This past weekend, Ladouceur made a rare appearance at Mohawk International Raceway on Friday night, trying to get some track time with the multiple early season rainouts that Cornwall has endured early this season. They were back at Cornwall on Sunday hoping Mother Nature would finally co-operate.
On Friday night, Joey and his team left their Alexandria, Ontario shop and headed to Mohawk International Raceway in Hogansburg, New York. Ladouceur was a multi time winner in the Pro Stock division, and was hoping some of that success would carry over in his second career Sportsman start at the track. He started the qualifying heat race from the eighth position and quickly moved forward. Before long he was inside the top five and finished the race with a fourth place result. After making some adjustments on the car, Joey returned to the track for the 20 lap main event. He started from the 18th position, and when the green flag waved to start the race, Ladouceur was quick to move through the pack. By the halfway point of the race he was inside the top ten, and continued to charge forward. Over the final few laps Joey had moved into sixth place, made it into the top five on the final lap.
Cornwall Speedway was the next stop on the weekend schedule and after rainouts in four of the first five schedule events, everyone was anxious to get going. Joey started his preliminary qualifying event from the fifth position and advanced to third before the end of the eight lap race. Just prior to the call to lineup for the features, the rain returned to Cornwall Speedway, postponing the 20 lap Sportsman race until a later date.
Ladouceur will return to Cornwall this coming weekend for a spectacular Canada Day Weekend celebration. Sunday night will be a regular show for the Sportsman division at Cornwall, but Monday will be the second event in the Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman series. After a top five finish in the first race of the series at Rolling Wheels Raceway, Joey would like nothing more than to get his first career win at Cornwall in front of the best Sportsman drivers throughout Ontario, Quebec and New York State.
